Battery project awarded NSW Government funding

August 13, 2020

The New England Solar Farm Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) has been selected as a successful applicant for funding under the NSW Government’s Emerging Energy Program.

The funding grant will allow UPC\AC Renewables Australia to build a 50MW/1hour BESS co-located with our proposed New England Solar Farm. The BESS will be implemented in conjunction with stage one of the solar farm project.

The solar and battery project will be Australia’s largest hybrid solar and battery energy storage facility, supporting a more stable NSW electricity network and putting downward pressure on electricity bills as the country transitions to a clean energy future.

Looking to the future as batteries come down the cost curve and the need for firming energy increases, UPC\AC Renewables has planning approval to expand the battery capacity up to 400 MWh.

The Emerging Energy Program is a NSW Government grant program administered by the NSW Department of Planning, Industry and the Environment.

The NSW Government has developed this program to support the commercialisation of new, large scale, electricity projects in NSW that use emerging, dispatchable technology. The program aims to support an orderly transition to a clean, reliable and affordable energy future. The program is technology-neutral and aims to leverage private sector investment and support jobs in regional NSW.

The New England Solar Farm and Battery project will support 700 jobs in construction and 15 ongoing jobs over the expected 25 to 30 year life of the facility.
